Woodbury University

Founded in 1884 and located in Burbank, California, this private, non-profit, coeducational, nonsectarian university of 1,500 students is the second oldest institution of higher learning in Los Angeles and one of the oldest business schools west of Chicago.

Woodbury Fashion Design students learn the art of fashion design through the study of design process, aesthetics, and fashion history and theory.

They are prepared through a sequenced curriculum that develops the expertise required to enter multiple areas of the professional design world. Students begin in the first year with design foundation courses, exploring the formal principles of design and color, as well as studio courses that teach clothing construction and beginning design.

They continue with costume history, fashion drawing and illustration, computer-aided design, and textiles, swimwear for men and women, couture and advanced draping, as well as an intense study of the business of fashion and professional practice.

Senior Review

Senior Review provides an opportunity for seniors to talk about their work and display their collections to a jury of fashion professionals who approve their inclusion in the final fashion show. Students also have the opportunity to explore additional design categories like shoes or children’s wear.

The culmination of their fashion education is the creation of an industry-level portfolio that will open doors to their dream jobs. In addition, there is a minor in Costume Design that provides students with exciting opportunities to create clothing for theater and also to collaborate with Woodbury film students.

More Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to interact with the Woodbury Fashion Study Collection, a museum-quality collection of more than 6,000 pieces, some dating back to the early 1800s. Students will experience current art and design events in the Los Angeles area by attending lectures, museums, galleries, and exhibitions.

They can also choose a summer study-abroad experience which has included destinations like London, Turkey, Antwerp, and Paris. They will grow as professionals through required career experiences and internships at exciting companies like BCBG and Guess.

US News & World Report ranks it #48 in Regional Universities and #15 in Best Colleges for Veterans. The acceptance rate is 74%.
