Fashion Institute of Technology

Founded in 1944, accredited in 1957 and located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, FIT is a State University of New York (SUNY) college of art, business, design, and technology connected to the fashion industry, ranked among the top five fashion schools in the world. 10,000 students live their career dream in this amazing urban campus of 9 buildings that cover an entire city block.

This complex includes classrooms, labs, design workshops, and multiple exhibition galleries. FIT offers AA, AAS, BS, BFA, MA and MS degrees. Undergraduate programs include BS in Fashion Merchandising, Design degrees in Fashion, Accessories, Jewelry, Menswear, Textiles and many more. Graduate programs cover Fashion and Textile studies to a greater depth. The Accessories Design program was the first of its kind in the United States and the Jewelry Design program is the only one in the U.S. that offers not only studio courses, but also design courses.

Certificate Programs

FIT offers the country’s only certificate programs in Millinery and Performance Athletic Footwear and the only menswear degree program in the country. Top designers such as Carolina Herrera, Norma Kamali, Gemma Kahng, Calvin Klein and Bob Mackie, serve as “critics,” helping students create an outfit to present in an on-campus exhibition or the annual student runway show, FIT on the Catwalk. There are more than 46 computer and specialty labs, with more than 1,200 computers available.

Also, FIT offers over 140 courses in an online environment. Graduates find full-time employment or freelance work at leading companies such as Michael Kors, Steve Madden, and Liz Claiborne. Internship sites have included Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger, among many others. The Museum at FIT, which began presenting exhibitions in the 1970s, includes more than 50,000 garments and accessories from the 18th century to the present, from important designers such as Adrian, Balenciaga, Chanel, and Dior.

Accreditation

FIT is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. The acceptance rate is 43%.
