Cornell University

Founded in 1865 and located in Ithaca, New York, this huge private university with a 745-acre main campus, and 20,000 students from the States and 122 countries, is among the very few in the world with such a great research scope on a vast array of subjects, from the basic and theoretical to applied work.

Fiber Science

The Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design offers a comprehensive education that covers the art of designing clothing and accessories, the business of manufacturing and marketing them internationally, and the science of fibers and textiles.

In addition to a shared core of foundation courses, students will specialize in one of three options: Apparel Design, Fashion Design Management, or Fiber Science.

In the Fiber Science option students will explore the physical, chemical, and engineering properties of fibrous materials and their applications, including biomedical materials, advanced engineering composites, geotextiles, and protective clothing. It’s a small but active department, and the only of this sort in the Ivy League.

National Textile Center

Cornell also belongs to the National Textile Center; a consortium of eight universities with specialized studies in this area. The Apparel Design option is unique in its focus on the fashion design process, integrating conceptual-design thinking with apparel skills, and design methods with innovative, cutting-edge technologies. Finally, the Fashion Design Management option applies economic and marketing principles to consumer and industry issues.

It focuses on the processes used to design, manufacture, and market apparel and textile products. During the summers many students will do internships to explore aspects of the industry and during the spring of the junior year will also study abroad. The department maintains the Cornell Costume and Textile Collection, which includes more than 9,000 items of apparel dating from the 18th century to the present, as well as a substantial collection of ethnographic textiles and costume, used for teaching and research.

MA in Fashion or Apparel Design

Graduates can also get an MA in Fashion or Apparel Design, or a Ph.D in Apparel Design. as well as an MS, MA or Ph.D in Fiber Science. The university ranked 10th in the 2013 Business Insider Best Colleges in America, 16th in the 2013 U.S. News & World Report National Universities, and 13th globally in an academic ranking of world universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2011. The acceptance rate is 17%.
